The art of craft

In the latest chapter of the Tabac Original journey, expressed through the all new Tabac Original Craftsman, Thapelo Mokoena reveals what it takes to master your craft

-

GQ: D’you think it’s possible to fully master your craft, or do you see it as an ongoing process? Thapelo Mokoena: We all think we’re mastering something, but it’s definitely ongoing. Experience and practise make us who we become every day. What you went through yesterday goes on to define what you go through tomorrow.

If you’re aware enough, and tuned into the universe – if you pay attention to the signs and are conscious enough, you’ll always know where you’re going and what to focus on.

GQ: What makes this next part of the Tabac Crafstman journey significant for you?

TM: The synchronicity. You couldn’t make up this kind of coincidence if you tried.

I see myself as a craftsman. My grandfather – the original craftsman – was a superb dresser. He was a very dapper man, but he also built many things with his bare hands. I’m definitely influenced by him: my hands are used to working. I’m not the always-put-together person, and I enjoy not being perfect all the time – I’m comfortable that way. I walk barefoot around my house, I used to walk around barefoot as a child. I believe qualities live in a craftsman. Someone who’s going to build something his own way, and infuse that signature touch into everything he creates. He crafts his own life, his future and his surroundings. The Tabac Craftsman story resonates with me.

GQ: What’s special about telling this story in an African context?

TM: For the first time, the African is holding the pen. Being able to identify and relate to that narrative is special. We’re the ones telling the stories, and writing all the scripts and screenplays. Being at the forefront shows that we’re also nuanced. If we allow audiences to see greatness in someone who looks like them, they’ll start to believe they, too, can be great.

For me, it’s beautiful. It’s the journey of all Africans. If the Tabac brand helps me express that I can add value to my journey through grooming, wellness and a positive lifestyle, I hope that it does the same for everyone else’s confidence and helps to make their journey easier.
