Union High pupils rewarded at prize-giving
GRAAFF-REINET — Union High School hosted its annual prizegiving in the school hall on Friday, October 20.
The guest of honour, Elaine Stanley, who graciously presented the prizes to those being recognised, was introduced by Master-of-ceremonies, Rory Sullivan.
Stanley has two children, Lauren and Ross, who have matriculated at Union High, and is married to Arland who is Chairman of the Union High School Governing Body.
Arland Stanley presented his welcoming speech and reported on the activities of the Governing Body after which the Headmaster, William Pringle, presented his annual report.
It was a glittering occasion where the many achievements and triumphs, and those who simply work hard behind the scenes, throughout the year were recognised.
In addition, a number of Grade 12 learners who intend studying at tertiary institutions next year received bursaries for further studies.
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the head prefects of the school for 2016.
The entire Union community was unanimous in their support for Cameron Muir (Headboy), Rebecca Langmead (Headgirl), Matt Harpur (Deputy Headboy) and Kelly Rose-innes (Deputy Headgirl).
Well done to Kelsey Minnaar for being awarded the Senior Victrix Ludorum UHS Trophy for Athletics, the Tallies Agencies Sulette Damons Prize for the Most Outstanding Hockey Player, the Pienaar Trophy for Open Girls’ Doubles Champions (shared with Micela Loock), as well as an award for an all-around achievement in Sport - the Mortimer Floating Trophy - Senior Girl , and Ross Stanley for being the Senior Victor Ludorum receiving The Radium Cleaners Trophy for Athletics, the Cecil Murray Trophy for the Most Outstanding Rugby Player of the season,an all-around achievement in Sport Award - the Smith-mack Trophy for a Senior Boy and the Way Memorial Bursary to the boy in Matric, who, by his character, conduct spiritedness and qualities of leadership, has contributed most to the life of the school - Head Boy.
Congratulations to Anje Oelofsen (Grade 12), Amanda Brink (Grade 11), Yu-pei Rong (Grade 10), Laetitia Theron (Grade 9) and Hannah Watermeyer (Grade 8) for finishing first in their year.
Union High is proud to announce their head prefects for 2018. Congratulations to Matt Harpur (Deputy Headboy), Cameron Muir (Headboy), Rebecca Langmead (Headgirl) and Kelly Roseinnes (Deputy Headgirl). Union and the school community wish them well in the year ahead.
