Union wins cricket encounter against Volkskool

GRAAFF-REINET — In a T20 cricket match against Laer Volkskool on Tuesday afternoon, October 17, Union’s U.13A team put together a polished performanc­e to win by 21 runs.

Union lost the toss and were put into bat. Sisipho Arnols displayed the temperamen­t of a profession­al opening batsman by batting for 15 overs while wickets were falling around him.

He scored 20 off 37 balls and anchored our innings. Matthew Basson scored a quick fire 10 off 10 balls and Jude Langmead provided much-needed impetus at the back of the innings scoring 20 not out off 22 balls. Union ended on 110/6.

With the ball, Aron Erasmus was once again outstandin­g.

He opened the bowling and finished with figures of 5 wickets for only 3 runs in his 4 overs. He bowled 2 wides which means he conceded 1 run from the bat in 24 deliveries. The rest of the team, including wicket-keeper Sisipho Arnols, all got a chance to bowl and bowled well. Volkskool couldn’t recover and finished on 89/9 after their 20 overs.

U.11A

That same Tuesday afternoon, Union’s U.11A cricketers played against Laer Volkskool in a pro twenty match.

Union won the toss and elected to bat first. Union’s batsmen occupied the crease well and scored at a healthy rate. Opening batsman Peter Michaels scored a solid 39 runs at the top of the order and was well supported by Dylan Kivedo and Cullen Marais.

Union scored 123 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.

Union’s top batmen were Peter Michaels (39), Cullen Marais (24), Dylan Kivedo (16) and Shakir Kasi (10 not out).

Laer Volkskool began their run chase needing 124 runs for victory.

The Union opening bowlers started very nervously conceding 22 runs in the first 2 overs. As soon as they settled wickets fell in quick succession through accurate wicket to wicket bowling. Cullen Marais got rid of the opening batsmen and was well supported by Dylan Kivedo and Cameron Swarts.

In a brilliant piece of fielding Kyle Liebenberg and Junior Kedemeli combined well and accounted for a stunning run out to dismiss Laer Volkskool. Union bowled Laer Volkskool out for 42 runs after 10.2 overs.

Union’s top bowlers were Dylan Kivedo (4 wickets for 3 runs in 2 overs), Cullen Marais (3 wickets for 20 runs in 3.2 overs) and Cameron Swarts (2 wickets for 7 runs in 2 overs).

Union won the match by 81 runs.
