Willowmore teen touches base one year into schooling at dream school
WILLOWMORE — A local Willowmore teen, Lee-ronique Hannies recently spoke with the Graaff-reinet Advertiser to share her experience at the OWLAG, one year in.
Lee-ronique 13-year-old Grade 8 learner, is currently enrolled at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy (OWLAG) for Girls in Johannesburg.
Formerly a learner at Elmor Primary School in Willowmore, the young girl says she had dreamed of attending the OWLAG since Grade 4 after having seen other girls also from Elmor Primary School being selected to attend the academy in previous years.
Lee-ronique was hopeful she too could one day be selected and in 2016 her dream became a reality.
Her school at the time, Elmor Primary, had received a request to nominate Grade 7 girls to be selected for admittance into the academy.
Her school then applied on her behalf as well as well as a few other girls who then went on to the first testing phase in George.
A few weeks later to her delight, LeeRonique and her parents received the news that she was selected to move on to next phase of testing which was a recruitment camp.
Thereafter she received her acceptance letter which she says was an emotional moment for her as well as her family and friends.
Lee-ronique describes the move as a great learning experience which has required her to do a lot of adjusting to the busy schedule but adds that she has adapted quite nicely, none the less.
The Willowmore teen fondly recalls Mayor Deon De Vos inviting her and friend Ashlin (also accepted at OWLAG) to attend a celebratory function which councillors from all wards attended.
She describes this as a proud moment and is grateful for the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipalities continued support.
Lee-ronique describes the sisterhood she has developed with many girls from various cultural backgrounds as incredibly special and she says she has enjoyed creating the relationships and forging these bonds through a shared love of netball.
She also takes part in debating and Model United Nations at the academy.
The academy makes use of the MYP curriculum in Grades 8 to 10 which Lee-ronique describes as challenging initially.
She has however adapted well and has become accustomed to the new teaching style which she compliments for its interactive and student centred approach.lee-ronique, who is passionate about politics, astronomy and psychology, has big dreams of one day studying Law and Human
Rights in the hopes of becoming a Human
Rights lawyer.
Lee-ronique Hannies (13).
