Make a book in half a day

- STAFF REPORTER

Book Dash is coming to Nelm in Grahamstown. Applications are open for those who are interested. Book Dash is an innovative, non-profit children’s publishing organisation.

A few times a year, Book Dash gathers writers, illustrators and designers in a large venue to work in teams to make a children's book in just 12 hours.

There’s a little more to it and a lot of planning before the day, but essentially Book Dash aims to address a desperate need for increased access to beautiful, locally-produced books for young children.

Once the books are complete, they all go up on the website bookdash.org/see/ books for anyone to read for free. Book Dash also works with funders to print them and give them away to literacy organisations, ECD centres and libraries.

Book Dash currently has 49 unique titles, many of which are in multiple South African languages. To date, Book Dash has distributed over 60 000 books across the country. Applications are now open to participate in the creative event of the year (just ask any one of our previous volunteers).

If you’re a writer, illustrator, designer, editor, a whiz with a camera, or a general superstar – join Book Dash in Grahamstown.

Space is limited, so Book Dash will be selecting participants based on talent and experience. Applications close on 10 October.

Book Dash will take place on Saturday 12 November from 9am-9pm at Nelm, 25A Worcester Street.
