Heritage Day festival with Sakhuluntu
The Sakhuluntu Cultural Group, in association with the International Library of African Music (ILAM) and the Access Music Project (AMP!) will present the Sakhuluntu Youth Festival 2016 at the Community Hall, Extension 9 in Joza tomorrow from noon.
The youth festival showcases local young talent performing traditional and modern dance, music, poetry, and drama.
Sakhuluntu Cultural Group is a community organisation operating from Extension 9. It was started in 1998 by a group of community activists led by Vuyo Booi in response to the absence of safe and fulfilling after-school activities for local learners.
Sakhuluntu is premised on the belief that creative expression and reconnection with their own cultural heritage are necessary for learners’ growth. The group’s focus is traditional Xhosa dance.
However, it also provides young people with skills in visual arts, drumming/percussion, reading, creative writing and drama.
The Sakhuluntu Youth Festival has been held in Extension 9 on Heritage Day since 2000.
This year Sakhuluntu is proud to co-host the festival with it partners, the International Library of African Music (ILAM) and the Access Music Project (AMP!).
