Trials for EC team

- By TUMELO THAMAGA

Rhodes University Women’s soccer team hosted African Connection and Chancey XI Soccer Development team for a mini-tournament at King Field on Wednesday.

Matches kicked off with Rhodes facing a mixture of African Connection and Chancey XI players. The opposition gave an impressive display playing Rhodes on the counter attack and their fastpaced game led them to outclass their opponents. Unable to settle and get themselves in to the game the home team lost 2-0.

The second game featured players from the three teams playing against each other. Initially the game was tight with neither team willing to yield possession. However as the game progressed Team A took the game to Team B and won 3-0. With one of the highlights being Gabriella BellairsLombard scoring a screamer of a free-kick from 18 yards out curling it into the top left corner.

The fixture served as a trial to find an 18-man squad that will compete against the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan team on Saturday in Grahamstown. The match against NMBM will be another trial for the two teams in order to select an Eastern Cape 18-man squad that will face a touring German Women’s team.
