VW Golf version 7 on 2017 horizon

- By SAM SPILLER

Last week saw the revealing and facelift of Volkswagen’s seventh-generation Golf, with several changes having happened to all aspects of the popular family hatchback.

The headlining change to the Golf can be found under the bonnet, with the introduction of an all-new 1.5-litre TSI turbopetrol engine. Claimed power output sits at 110 kW and 250 Nm, with a fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km.

A Bluemotion derivative good for 96 kW is also available, while the GTI gets a power increase of 169 kW, and the GTI Performance package takes it all the way up to 180 kW.

Transmission wise, the old six-speed gearbox is replaced by a new seven-speed Dual Clutch (DSG).

Exiting the bonnet, buyers will greeted by redesigned bumpers, complete with halogen LED head and taillights, and new front wings. New wheel and colour options are available, along with new and refined fabrics and trims for the interior.

The equipment level of the 2017 Golf remains unchanged, with the exception of some new features. These include an Active Info Display for the dashboard, and an upgraded colour-touchscreen in- fotainment system with varying display sixes dependent on vehicle derivative. Another new feature is the ability to charge phones via inductive charging, connected between the vehicle’s external antenna and a specially-designed storage compartment.

Safety features include adaptive cruise control, Front Assist with emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring, and Park Assist. Volkswagen has also included a Traffic Jam Assist function, though this has yet to be confirmed for the local market.

The updated Volkswagen Golf 7 is expected to arrive in South Africa in the middle of next year.
