Grahamstown hosted the inaugural New Year's Cup soccer tournament from 16 to 31 December. A total of 32 teams descended on Grahamstown for the group stages of the tournament. This number went down to 16, before the quaterfinals, semi-finals and eventually the finals. Grahamstown-based Makana Rhini United (green tops) and Amavarara, from Queenstown, were both unbeaten as they made their way to the finals. It was the home side, with a bit of luck on their side, that managed to find the winning goal, against the run of play.
