A feast of good music
Classical music lovers can look forward to a mini-Festival next week, with three concerts to enjoy.
On Tuesday 21 February, flautist Liesl Stoltz and pianist Catherine Foxcroft kick off the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology's concert series. In a recital sponsored by Samro, the duo will perform compositions from the 17th to the 21st century, and will showcase a new contemporary work, Imicabango (Impressions), by the South African composer Alexander F Johnson. Hailed by reviewers as two of the most exciting performers in South Africa, Stoltz and Foxcroft will perform on Tuesday 21 February 2017 at 7.30pm in the Beethoven Room . Tickets R90/ R50 at the door. ru.ac.za
On Thursday 23 February at 7.30pm, the Grahamstown Music Society opens its 2017 season with Spanish pianist Antonio Galera in a concert of classical works by Chopin, Manuel de Falla, and Granados at the DR Wynne Music School, St Andrew’s College and DSG.
Galera is one of the most promising young performers on the concert circuit today. Winner of the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Award, his career garnered performances in major halls and festivals. He received the Best Spanish Music Performance Award at the 2013 Iturbi Prize Competition in Valencia. Tickets R90/ R70/ R50. Refreshments available.
The next night, Friday 24 February, at 6pm in the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Lithemba Busakwe and Sibusiso Mkhize are launching a schools intervention programme in concert, for disadvantaged schools and students around Grahamstown.
“The programme is as a result of the realisation that poor academic performance of learners stems from a variety of socioeconomic issues, such as lack of resources and the financial background of the students,” Busakwe said.
It’s for that reason that the entrance fee will be a pair of school shoes ranging from sizes 2-11 and a pack of sanitary towels.
The hosts invite local organisations and businesses to sponsor 50 pairs of school shoes and 50 packs of sanitary towels. lithemba@emcol.co.za or smkhize@vghs .co.za or
