The reality remains, we seriously need to pay attention to the economy and something drastic has to happen in order to alleviate poverty, lower unemployme­nt and bridge inequality. The status quo cannot remain, it just perpetuate­s these ills. None of us can afford to be apathetic.

Despite the number of ticked prediction­s, SONA 2017 gave us some surprises.

I found the direct mention of the fight against drugs, an entire paragraph devoted to this subject and a first for a SONA post-1994, refreshing. While we may all agree that prevention is better than cure, the government’s resolve to invest more into rehabilita­tion facilities does indicate a certain level of seriousnes­s on the matter.

The Eastern Cape was mentioned as a province that would benefit from these.
