A total of 77 women golfers took part in the Belmont Ladies Open golf day at the Belmont Golf Club, which was won by Des Bailey and Fiona Richard on a score of 50 points.

The format of the open was a Four-ball Betterball Stableford.

“This format made for a more enjoyable competition,” said Leigh Beckerling, Lady Captain.

Sandra Knoesen and Jenny Ririe finished in second place on 46 points and third were Anne Knox and Liz Bowker, also on 46 points.

The Belmont Ladies Open golf day was sponsored by GBS Mutual Bank, numerous businesses and individuals in Grahamstown and took place in good golfing weather conditions.

“The ladies section of the Belmont golf club would like to thank all the sponsors for their generosity,” said Beckerling.

Golfers made their way from all over the Eastern Cape, including visitors from the following clubs: Jeffrey’s Bay, Walmer, Port Alfred, Humewood, Cathcart, Dordrecht, Bedford, Westbank, Simola, Uitenhage and East London, with 17 Belmont members taking part.

Prizes were awarded up to 12th place, and there were also prizes for nearest the pins, longest and straightest drives and lucky draws.

There were some very good scores returned.

“The theme for the day was ‘In the Navy’ and there were many sailors on board the ‘MV BELMONT’, from the Captain down to the navvies”, said Beckerling.
