Rugby and netball on the hill
The 19th annual Frans Erasmus U13 rugby and netball tournament, hosted by PJ Olivier, takes place at the school this weekend. The sporting activities begin at 9am today, with Saturday’s action starting at 7.30am. The official opening of the tournament will take place at 7.45am on the school’s main sports field. The official opening has become a tradition over the past years, with the PJ U13 netball and rugby sides kitted up in front of their schoolmates. The event is then opened after words from the headmaster, Joubert Retief and the coaching staff.
This year’s event has been given an international flavour, with Dubai Exiles U13 rugby team from Abu Dhabi, currently in the Eastern Cape on a school tour.
The tournament will include 600 boys and girls from 26 schools, making up the 28 teams. Manie Cronje, tournament convener, said this year’s will be the biggest yet.
Rugby and or netball teams will be representing Oakhill Private School (Knysna), Stulting (Humansdorp), Cradock Primary, Gill Primary (Somerset East), PJ Olivier, St Andrew's Prep, Graeme College (Grahamstown), Port Alfred High School, Fort Beaufort, Handhaaf Primary (Uitenhage), Setlaars Park Primary and Dr Viljoen Primary (Port Elizabeth). The BUCO Coastal XV and the Makana Brick Grahamstown XV will also take part in the tournament, featuring players from previously disadvantaged areas. The tournament is held every year in honour of former Springbok and Eastern Province rugby player Frans Erasmus who coached the PJ Olivier 1st XV. Erasmus died in a car accident just outside Grahamstown in 1988.
