Locals scoop EC cricket awards
The annual Eastern Cape Cricket Awards evening took place on 26 April, and multiple cricketing awards and recognition were given out to deserving athletes. Several Grahamstown based teams and players were honoured at this event, which was held at St George’s Cricket Stadium.
The award for the best team based in Grahamstown went to the Cuylerville Cricket Club, while Station Hill won the Most Conscientious Club Award from the members of the Grahamstown Cricket Board.
These awards went to the best teams in each category that fall under the Grahamstown area.
Several Grahamstown locals managed to break through and earn a number of individual awards. Brandon Handley was awarded the Best Rural Cricketer out of Grahamstown, while Peter Jarvis, a St Andrew's College pupil, came home with the award for u/17 Cricketer of the Year for 2017.
Other Grahamstown locals, Odwa Xanxa and Josh van Heerden won best bowler and batsman respectively during the Eastern Province Regional 2-Day Competition.
Perhaps the proudest moment for Grahamstown was the presentation of the Presi- dent's Award to old Graemian, Jon Jon Smuts.
Smuts has also recently been included in the South Africa A side that will take on the England Lions during May and June.
Grahamstown cricket hopes to not only maintain their representation in these awards, but to improve and hopefuly increase the number of award its members receive in the years to come.
