Easterns show the way
Eastern rugby club’s 1st team beat Lily White to win the inaugural Top 4 Mini Tournament held on Youth Day last week.
The event was hosted by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, in conjunction with their Youth Day sports event for primary schools.
The teams currently occupying the top four spots on the South Eastern District Rugby Union log were invited to take part in the tournament. Rhodes Phoenix, as one of the top four sides, were unable to take part as many of their players were involved in exams, or on holiday.
Thus their spot went to fifthplaced Eastern. They may not have been among the original teams to take part, but they showed their worthiness by winning the tournament.
In the opening match of the day, Eastern beat Kowie 2418 while Lily White made it a Grahamstown derby when they beat Klipfontein in the second match of the day. Lily White dominated from the start with a win of 48-0.
In the afternoon, Kowie won against Klipfontein 58-20 to take third place and they received the Losers Champs trophy for their efforts.
Eastern went on to beat Lily White 31-19 in the final, earning a rugby kit, consisting of a jersey, shorts and socks for each player.
They were also awarded the Top 4 Mini Tournament trophy. Lily White players each received a medal as runners-up. All prizes were sponsored by DSRAC.
