Local anglers aim for SAs

- STAFF REPORTER

Thirty one anglers took part in the first Rock & Surf Super Pro League (RASSPL), organised by Kowie Crackers past Saturday. The RASSPL is a catch and release league.

Despite the poor conditions, the swells were big and a bit on the cold side and as a result the fishing was slow. However, there were still 91 fish caught consisting of 12 species with a calculated weight of 33kg.

First place in the Biggest Fish Species went to David Drennan with a Bronze Bream of 44cm (2.5kg), earning R500 cash prize. He was followed by Andrew Smith with a Kob of 57cm (1.9kg) which won a Portable Braai sponsored my BUCO. Drenna also took third and fourth spots with a White Steenbras of 45cm (1.5kg), and a Zebra of 35cm (1.2kg) which earned him another R500 cash and a BestDrive Wheel Alignment sponsored my EP Mufflers Grahamstown.

The Shark and Ray Prizes were also not won as they need to be a minimum of 2kg to count.

Des Mardon missed the shark prize by 1cm with a Leopard Catshark

Karen Kemp won the Ladies category with 102 points winning a TV & VCR Bracket sponsored by BUCO, while Deon Marais won the Masters category with 298 points winning two packs of Sensation Hooks sponsored by BUCO.

David Drennan won most points on the day with 601 points winning a R200 Cash Prize sponsored by AquaFlow in Grahamstown.

Kowie Crackers club has seen an increase in membership, which they believe is due to next year’s RASSPL Nationals to be held in the Eastern Cape. The nationals will take place in Port Alfred from 26 -30 April next year. While there were no U14 and U21 anglers at last Saturday’s event, organisers hope this will change before their next event.

The next RASSPL event will be held in Hamburg on 2 September where the Kowie Crackers will be competing against the Border Blacktips from the East London area.

The Kowie Crackers thanked their sponsors who make the past event possible.
