Grahamstown Games a hit
The inaugural Grahamstown Games were a massive success made possible through the support of local businesses and community members.
The concept was enjoyed by all who participated and the sponsored teams did their benefactors proud, both in spirit and performance.
The top spot was fought tooth and nail, with a close first and second place. Team Reject Rowers, made up of Rose Palmer, Ryan Palmer, Lee-Ann Persse and Michael Thomas, finished in top spot, with team Business Sense (Dale Edwards, Hailey Jackson, Megan Hobson and Jason Meaton) taking second place.
Tied for third were Skibowski and RowZambezi which called for a round of “sudden-death”, a two-minute assault bike challenge for maximum calory-loss. This resulted in a battle of epic proportions with another near-tied result just in favour of Team Skibowski with a final score of 74 to 73. Skibowski was made up of Tracy van Zyl, Cassie Lister, Jade Bowles and Jason Maclachlan. RowZambezi included Maike Dickmann, Sarah Raubenheimer, Mike Rogan and Greg McClean.
“Although the day presented a multitude of physical challenges to every single team, they all managed to maintain a high level of spirit and fun, with much banter and shouts of encouragement between teams – a true sign of The Fitness Box ethos,” said organiser Simon van der Merwe of The Fitness Box.
“The Fitness Box, would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the sponsors, Harcourts Grahamstown and The EyeStore, as well as team sponsors, prize sponsors, volunteers, marshals, Grahamstown Business Forum, Department of Arts, Sport & Culture, the Grahamstown Traffic Department, St Andrew’s College, spectators and most importantly, participants, for making the day such a huge success. Without the involvement from these key people, the Grahamstown Games would not have been possible,” said Van der Merwe.
The Grahamstown Games look set to become an annual Spring Day event to be hosted by The Fitness Box with CrossFit Grahamstown. “Keep a lookout in the Grocott’s Mail and on Facebook for future information and event opportunities,” said Van der Merwe.
