Sun shines on Golden Games

-

On Friday 15 September the regional round of the Golden Games took place at the Oval. Older people from Makana, Graaff Reinet and Humansdorp took part in the regional leg of the Golden Games.

The Makana leg of the Golden Games took place recently. The regional round was to determine who would compete in the national event in Pinetown, Durban on 23 October.

Nomahlubi Scott welcomed the visitors. The Golden Games feature residents in old age homes and those who are associated with centres for the elderly.

Programme director Gcobani Spogter explained that the South African government is a signatory to the 2002 Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, when governments committed themselves to address the challenges of their ageing populations.

The recommendations adopted covered the following priority areas:

Older Persons and development

Advancing health and wellbeing into old age and ensuring enabling and supportive environments are three main priorities and the Golden Games are a mechanism to implement them.

They are organised as a partnership between the Depart- ment of Social Development, the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, the Department of Health, the South African Police Service and Sarah Baartman District Municipality, with catering by the Department of Social Development atering by DSD.

Matebese Funeral Parlour loaned additional chairs for the event.
