Krotoa to open Toronto South Africa International

- STAFF REPORTER

Krotoa has finished its run at local box office but the film is still in the awards race.

Krotoa has won a ninth International Award at the Montreal International Black Film Festival in Canada as Best Narrative Feature. The 13th Montreal International Black Film Festival ran from 27 September to 1 October 1, and announced its prize winners at the Festival’s closing ceremonies on Sunday 1 October. Other films in the running were Carpinteros, by José Maria Cabral (République Dominicaine); Kalushi – The Story of Solomon Mahlangu, by Mandla Dube and Dabka, by Bryan Buckley.

Krotoa, a feisty, bright, young 11 year old girl is removed from her close-knit Khoi tribe to serve Jan van Riebeeck, her uncle’s trading partner. She is brought into the first Fort established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652.

There she grows into a visionary young woman who assimilates the Dutch language and culture so well that she rises to become an influential interpreter for van Riebeeck who became the first Governor of the Cape Colony.

As such Krotoa ends up being rejected by her own Khoi people and destroyed by the Dutch when she tries to find the middle way between the two cultures.

Krotoa has also been selected as the gala night opening film at the Toronto South Africa International Film Festival which will be held on the 14 and 15 October in Toronto, Canada. The film has recently been picked up by Shoreline Entertainment in California, US for international distribution throughout the globe.

The seven-week cinema run is finished in South Africa with the rental release scheduled for 27 November.

The DVD will be available in stores and online from 1 December.

KROTOA was produced by the SAFTA Award-winning film company, Penguin Films, in association with kykNET and is distributed by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.
