Local schools at Grey High

Grey High School in Port Elizabeth once again hosted schools from across the country in their annual water polo festival over 27-28 January weekdend. Among the teams were several from St Andrew’s College, as well as Kingswood College 1st boys’ team.

St Andrew’s sent their u14A, u15A and 2nd teams to Port Elizabeth, and faced strong competitio­n from Grey High School, Pearson, Selborne and Paul Roos. The u14A beat Pearson u14A 11-5 win; lost 9-5 Selbourne; and lost 5-3 to Paul Roos.

They finished the weekend off strong, with a 6-5 downing of hosts Grey High in a historic match.

The St Andrew’s u15A beat Pearson 8-2; went down 5-4 against Selborne; and forced a 4-4 draw against Paul Roos. The local boys beat Grey High 5-4 to round out their weekend.

The St Andrews 2nd team saw off both Pearson (8-3) and Selborne (7-3) in their opening matches of the weekend, but despite coming from 6-2 at half time, they lost 7-6 to Paul Roos. The boys also lost to Grey High 5-3 in the final match.

Kingswood’s 1st boys team was one of 16 teams from across the country to compete in a round-robin tournament over the festival. They lost 6-1 to Alban’s, 7-4 to St David’s and 7-2 to tournament favourites Clifton despite being 1-1 at half time.

Day two of the tournament was better for the Kingswood side, as they beat Glenwood House (7-2), St Peter’s (5-1) and Parktown (3-2) and finished 13th out of 16 teams.

Both St Andrew’s and Kingswood seem to be ready for a fantastic water polo season ahead.
