‘We love the weathered look’

Thanks to the clever use of paint, this brand-new home boasts a kitchen and en-suite bathroom that look as if they have plenty of history.

Carina and Jurie Prins have been living on the Val de Vie Estate in Paarl for the past 10 years. They’ve lived in two different homes on the estate but the second one is a newly-built abode. Carina loves starting from scratch and she says building is her hobby.

“Jurie and I are both very creative people,” she says. “This is the 10th project we’ve tackled together. Our friends’ children always tease us, saying I have had five kitchens in the same house. Or: ‘Aunty Carina sells her house when she wants a new kitchen.’ Beautiful décor is my passion; I find it easy to bring it all together.”

Carina wanted a very specific look in her new kitchen, so she chose black. “It adds drama to the space. And it’s our family’s favourite place to hang out.”

The white granite slabs were installed by JA Clift. The dramatic black cupboards complement the Falcon stove.

The cement floor was laid by Stucco Italiano in a natural colour.
