Kitchen remodelling company Malco built the cupboards from Supawood and Lisa Spaarwater of Lemon & Lilac Paint Techniques took care of the painting. Both contractors were also involved in the refurbishment of the Prins’s previous home.

Carina specifically wanted the cupboards to have a weathered look so that they wouldn’t look brand new and ordinary.

“I also didn’t want the space to look like a traditional kitchen, so the microwave and any unsightly or loose items are hidden in the freestanding cupboard that we left unpainted.” Two tall cupboards serve as pantry storage.

“Freestanding cupboards create a lived-in feel but I also wanted a surprise element, which is why I chose a black Falcon stove and black paint for the cupboards.”

The end result is the sociable kitchen Carina had always wanted. “I love it when someone comes to sit with me while I cook,” she says with a smile. >>
