Painting mild steel or iron? Marketing manager of Dulux South Africa Nonkululeku Mcunu offers these tips: • Remove rust, scale and dirt by scraping the surface with steel wire brushes and then thoroughly sand with mediumgrit sandpaper, finishing with fine-grit sandpaper. • Wipe the surface with a solvent wash (rags dipped in lacquer thinners) and allow it to dry. • Apply one coat of Dulux Trade Corrocote 1 Metal Etch Primer (two coats for coastal conditions). • Once dry, apply a coat of Dulux Universal Undercoat before applying the selected finishing coat of paint; we recommend Dulux Waterbased Pearlglo or Gloss Enamel.
