NATURALLY DYED BUNTING

-

YOU WILL NEED

bunting vinegar water red onion skins (you can use berries or turmeric too)

HERE’S HOW...

1 Start by preparing your fabric: boil it in 1 cup of vinegar to 4 cups of water for an hour. This will clean the fabric as well as create a fixative for the natural dye. 2 To create the natural dye, place your onion skins in a pot filled with about 1L water and boil for between 30–45 minutes. Once you’re happy with the colour, remove the pot from the heat and strain the dye mixture. Cool before using it to dye your fabric – this helps with colour fastness. 3 Now place your fabric in the pot with the dye mixture and simmer until you’re happy with the colour. Note Colour intensity will vary according to the amount of water, natural medium and fixative you use.

Tip Follow the same steps to create a dye with turmeric or berries. If you use the latter, do add ¼ cup of salt per litre of water when you boil the berries.
