Chic pantry cupboard

Need extra storage space in the kitchen? Give an old wardrobe a new lease on life! This old ball-and-claw wardrobe received royal treatment in the capable hands of Nadine Vosloo, marketing manager of Tjhoko Paint.

She explains: “If there’s one thing I want in my own kitchen, it’s a pantry cupboard like this. Because wonderful recipes will surely take wings from such a cupboard. And speaking of recipes, here’s the ‘recipe’ for the wardrobe:”

1 I first cleaned the old cupboard with lacquer thinners and then let it dry completely – this usually takes about

40 minutes.

2 Then the fun could begin! Using a paint scraper, I applied Tjhoko Paint Stencil of Paris in those places where I wanted more accents.

On the outside of the cupboard, I painted a border with July around the Thinus’s Terracotta, after which I carefully shaded the two colours with the soft side of a damp kitchen sponge to create a ‘washed’ effect.

Embellishments painted in Thinus’s Terracotta add extra detail to the doors – they were attached with Evo-stick Sticks Like Sh*t.

3 After about 2 hours of drying time, the entire wardrobe – including the areas with Stencil of Paris – was painted with three coats of Thinus’s Terracotta. A 110mm sponge roller works well for this. Give each coat about 40 minutes to dry completely.

4 Next I applied a light coat of Matt Black over the Stencil of Paris sections. The grooves in the door were ‘aged’ with Nade (use a thin artist’s brush for this) to create a lovely patina. I sanded in places to further weather the look.

?? ?? The wardrobe’s legs were painted in Matt Black. On the inside, Matt
Black, Nade and Thinus’s Terracotta were used; the stencil work against the back panel was done with Stencil MC001-39 from the Tjhoko Paint range in the colours Matt Black and Cloud White.
