Give ordinary kitchen seats a cheerful facelift with these quick and easy projects.

WITH TAPE BELTS...

1 Paint a stool with two coats of Annie Sloan English Yellow, then seal with Annie Sloan Clear Wax.

2 Add a quirky element by securing a loose cushion to the seat with belts made from measuring tapes – wrap one of the measuring tapes around the cushion and under the seat, adding about 12–15cm extra, and cut the measuring tape accordingly. Do the same with the second measuring tape.

3 Fold the measuring tape around a 16 x 22 x 3mm belt buckle, and punch two holes about 1.5cm apart. Insert two tubular rivets into the holes and secure in place by hammering on the cap.

4 Wrap the measuring tape around the cushion and chair again and mark where to punch a hole for the belt pin to go through. Use a hole punch to punch a hole.

Secure the cushion on the seat of the stool with the measuring tape belts.

WITH CORD...

1 Paint one stool with two coats of Annie Sloan Pure, allowing it to dry between coats. Once dry, seal with Annie Sloan Clear Wax.

2 Cut two pieces of rope cord in two colours (± 30m each) into four 6m lengths and seal the ends by burning them with the flame of a lighter to prevent them from unravelling.

3 Wrap yellow and white cord around the legs of the stool simultaneously, securing in place at the beginning and end with a hot glue gun.

Tip We made a decorative cross-stitch pattern on the seat of the stool by drilling holes through the seat, then winding the leftover yellow cord through the holes.
