Home Renovations

Bigger, better and more beautiful

“The house had lots of under-utilised corners we were able to make good use of, allowing us to enlarge the floor area without having to extend too much into the property. We mostly built upwards and incorporated the unused areas into the house.

“Before the renovations, the house had three bedrooms and two bathrooms and all the living areas were on one level; there was also a basement room, with a bathroom.

“After converting this room into Heinz’s studio, building a braai room above and covering the stoep, the house, which now extends over three levels, is more than big enough.”

This was Heinz and Aletté’s first renovation, but they both agree that “building is not for sissies”.

“There are always unforeseen issues,” says Heinz. “We were the project managers and sometimes the lines of communication between us, the builders from Crous Construction and the independent contractors who did the smaller jobs became a bit blurred, and this resulted in delays. And, of course, that costs money.” But they have no regrets. “We particularly love our indoor braai – especially in summer when we can throw open the huge windows,” says Heinz.

“I like the red front door and the big island in the kitchen,” says Aletté. “And, of course, the stoep! It’s wonderful being able to entertain outdoors.”

The kids are also delighted. “My favourite place is my bedroom,” says little Lian. “And I like playing with my brothers, and the swimming pool – and the yellow swing in the playground nearby!” >>

The living room on the top floor is as big as a double garage and this is where Aletté runs her image-consulting business. “When the kids are older, they can use this space as their chill area,” she says.
