Wisdom in wine boxes
Elly Grossman of Cannon Rocks writes
Ludwig, you are brilliant! I’ve always lined my planting holes with a layer of newspaper but the winds in the Eastern Cape play havoc with the carefully arranged sheets. As chance would have it, I bought the March issue of Home in the midst of a transplanting frenzy, and your advice was spot on (see page 107). The only suitable cardboard box available was an empty wine box, which I used to follow your suggestion. Standing back to admire the transplanted shrub, I mulled over the fortuitousness of wine bottles being packed in ideal-sized boxes. If friends raise eyebrows when told that wine-drinking is essential for successful transplanting, I can reply: “Ludwig says so!” Who is going to contradict Ludwig? Hic!
