Hanniki’s gardening tips

- (But I have many more, says Hanniki!)

• Know your taste and style of gardening – and stick to it. • Make a list of plants you cannot do without and plant them all! • Draw a rough sketch to indicate, more or less, what and where you wish to plant. • Don’t be afraid to make changes and try something new. • Be generous with cuttings and plants. By exchanging plants with friends, you’ll save a lot of money – and it’s such fun! • Use water sparingly. I made my beds smaller and put down more gravel. I also removed some of my roses and replaced them with perennial vygies. • Be passionate about your garden and you’ll soon reap the rewards of your efforts! • Roses – especially pink, highly scented ones. I can’t imagine a garden without ‘Dainty Bess’, ‘Double Delight’, ‘Cécile Brünner’, ‘Blossom Magic’, ‘Isidingo’, ‘French Panarosa’ and ‘Gülilah’. White ‘Iceberg’ roses are a wonderful asset and flower prolifically. • Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) • Forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) • Busy Lizzy (Impatients walleriana) • Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) • Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) • Evening primrose (Oenothera berlandieri ‘Ballerina’) which spreads so easily • Orange jasmine (Murraya exotica) • Duranta erecta ‘Sapphire Showers’ • Leopard tree (Caesalpinia ferrea)
