Growing up

We love this contemporary take on framing your growing child's footprints (left). And it's so easy to do! We used Annie Sloan chalk paint in the colour Graphite – you could also use leftover acrylic PVA – and applied it to the soles of different-sized shoes using an ink roller (you could also use a small sponge roller). After using a pencil to mark where you'd like the prints to be positioned, firmly press the soles of the shoes in place against the wall. Vroom vroom!

This feature was created by Germarie Bruwer of décor and design blog homeology.co.za; she arranged a collection of cars above her workspace to remind her of her sons aged seven, five and one. “I bought the cars for this project specifically, but it's also a nifty way to use all those cars that boys tend to get as gifts from everyone!” Here's how to do it: use a frame to trace the area on the wall, then design whatever pattern you like before using Prestik or a glue gun to apply the cars. >>

Full of beans!

Home chief copy editor Tessa Jean-Jacques’ daughter Zoey (9) has always loved to draw. “Over the years, she’s gone from using playful, bright colours to experimenting more with a graphic black-and-white style,” Tessa says. To showcase the evolving style of the budding artist, five of Zoey’s drawings were used to make this eyecatching 50 x 50cm canvas beanbag – perfect for her room or even the lounge. The images were printed directly onto fabric squares (this can be done at most print and photo developing stores) before the squares were sewn together with a sewing machine, leaving one side open so it could be filled with EPS beads (available from polystyrene suppliers) and then sewn closed by hand. Side by side

Keen to make a showpiece of those old album photos? Here’s a charming way to do it: photos of three siblings at different ages have been attached down the length of a piece of string with bulldog clips. They’ve been arranged so that when the photos are viewed horizontally, all the kids are at the same age. Cute!
