Know your waterwise plants

-

Commonly called the burn jelly plant or cat’s tail, Bulbine frutescens is an indigenous succulent that flowers repeatedly throughout summer. The plant is both heat- and drought resistant and will tolerate poor soil, but it must be well-drained. It does best in a sunny spot. The evergreen grass-like foliage grows in clumps to about 30cm tall, with orange or yellow flower spikes with frilly yellow stamens. Grow it as a groundcover or in pots near the swimming pool so that the jelly-like juice in the leaves will be easily available for treating insect bites and sunburn.
