[ ORNATE FRAMES OR SIMPLE LINES?]
Ornate frames still have a place in the home; it depends entirely on the artwork, says Brett. “I consider an ornate, gilded frame as an artwork itself. They’re often used for original textured oil paintings that demand a bold framing approach.” Large mirrors with gilded frames also create a striking feature.
If you’re still unsure of which frame to use, take your décor style into consideration, advises interior designer Anien Bell: • For a French look, consider silver frames, reclaimed oak or lime-washed frames. • For a contemporary look, opt for black or white box frames. • For a shabby chic look, frames made from old floorboards remain timeless.
You don’t always need expensive art to create an impressive feature; consider these budget options:
• Twelve calendar images in store-bought frames create a striking collage when all the pictures are within the same theme.
• A collection of old and new, floral or graphic side plates makes for a colourful, eye-catching focal wall.
• Hang round embroidery frames adorned with ribbons. You can also tie foliage to a frame for a beautiful wreath any time of the year.
• Collections of clocks, mirrors, trays, scales or even just empty picture frames all painted in the same colour will create instant impact.
• Three to five ‘floating’ wooden boxes mounted on a wall will provide display space for anything from photos to trinkets – and hexagonal shapes are still on trend.
• A family photo wall always adds a personal touch. Mix it up by combining canvas prints, photo frames and vinyl prints. >>
