CREATION ON A PLATE
The charming story of Creation Wines dates back to 2002 when Swiss-trained winemaker Jean-Claude Martin and his wife, Carolyn, bought a tract of land in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus and set out to establish a winery. Among the many challenges they faced was the fact that the land had never been planted with vines before. There were also no basic amenities such as running water or electricity. However, thanks to sheer determination, hard work and a generous dash of innovation, a success story has unfolded which is now reflected in a unique wine and small plate Food Pairing menu.
Aptly named “The Story of Creation”, the menu celebrates the pioneering spirit prevailing on the estate. It features seven different courses or chapters, artfully paired with eight awardwinning Creation wines. Each wine enhances a specific dish, and thus the Creation narrative unfolds with each delectable chapter.
According to wine pairing guru Carolyn Martin, The Story of Creation conveys the art and science of flavour profiling in a novel, interactive way. A shining example is the elegantly spicy Creation Reserve Pinot Noir matched with a dish of goat’s milk cheese, beetroot, raspberry, pomegranate, radish, pistachio, Pinot Noir salt, smoked duck breast and jus – pure magic to the palate!
Since 2002, Creation has received many a prestigious accolade, including the Wine Tourism South Africa Klink Award for Great Pairings, which it has won for the fourth time this year.The estate has furthermore been recognised for its trendsetting ethos by winning the Great Wine Capitals (GWC) Best of Wine Tourism Award in the category “Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences” for the third time.
Among the team’s latest innovations has been the introduction of an exciting new Brunch Pairing Menu, comprising five awardwinning Creation wines, each matched with a scrumptious dish. Another newcomer to their reper toire is the rather intriguing Kiss & Tell Pairing, featuring the estate’s flagship cultivars, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
In fact, since its initial Wine and Cheese Platter Pairing, Creation has become a pioneer in the field of pairing and now boast a veritable treasure trove of culinary experiences.Visitors can also opt for the Chefs’Three-Course Pairing, the Artisanal Cheese or Charcuterie Pairing, the Paradoxical Chocolate Pairing, the Nonalcoholic Tea Pairing or the Surprise Pairing for Kids.
