Indwe

Good day and welcome aboard this SA Express flight. Whatever destination you may be heading to, I trust your experience on board will be a good one.

It’s February and love is in the air. Or, at least, red velvet, stuffed creatures and overpriced roses are in stores. And while heart-shaped balloons, love-bug chocolates and romantic fortune cookies may not be your thing, it is hard not to buy into all of the romance just a little bit. (Or a lot – cash wise – if your significant other has been eyeing those roses!)

But I’m afraid that you’ll find very little of that in this edition of Indwe. Not because we are love cynics, mind you, but because when we think of “love” we automatically think of travel. For many of us, travel – and the opportunity to visit new places and experience new things – is one of the major love of our lives.

I have my mother to thank to introducing me to this particular suitor. When we were growing up she always said that the best gifts you can give your children are a good education, and the gift of travel. And so, for my 21st birthday she sent me – on a nurse’s salary, no less – on a Contiki Tour around Europe. I slept in a tent, barely had enough money to do all the things I wanted to do, and spent a lot of time on a bus. But my eyes were opened! All of those fascinating cultures and sights that I had only read about in books were so much more vivid in person, and the memories of my adventures there and the people I met, were a better gift than any material possession.

The fact that you are on this airplane is evidence of the fact that you have also experienced this to some extent. Even if you are travelling for business, and your destination is Bloemfontein not Bombay, a change is as good as a holiday, they say. And even a quick drive from the airport to your hotel can unearth the unexpected – from a particularly good sunset, to a billboard announcing that your favourite band is coming to SA.

And if that’s not enough, why not make sure that the next time you fly will be to head off on holiday? We have included a number of lovely destinations in this edition of Indwe to give you some ideas and to spark your imagination for your next romantic interlude with your travel suitor.

And when you head off on that much anticipated holiday, be sure to have a quick read of Indwe – because SA Express has some exciting changes on the way.

Safe travels,

Nicky Furniss Editor
