DUT’s DNA strands which are student-centeredness and engagement are the two threads which make up the fabric of the University as outlined in its Strategic Plan 2.0.
DUT is located in the beautiful cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg (PMB). As a University of Technology, it prioritises the quality of teaching and learning by ensuring its academic staff possesses the highest possible qualification that they can get.
DUT is a result of the merger in April 2002 of two prestigious technikons, ML Sultan and Technikon Natal. It was named the Durban Institute of Technology and later became the Durban University of Technology in line with the rest of the universities of technology.
DUT,is a member of the International Association of Universities, is a multi-campus university of technology at the cutting edge of higher education, technological training and research. It operates on five different campuses in Durban, and two in Pietermaritzburg.

DUT qualifications are recognised internationally, and it has a remarkable track record of producing outstanding graduates, who are pioneers and influential in various sectors of the economy both locally and internationally.
At an international level, the DUT Confucius Institute (CI) is a vehicle that promotes friendship between China and South Africa. DUT’s CI stood out in 2017 with the receipt of the “Global Advanced Confucius Institute” award at the 12th Global Confucius Institute Conference. We regard this achievement as a sterling feat for the DUT’s CI as there are only 25 Advanced Confucius Institutes and five Advanced Confucius Classes from 525 Confucius Institutes and 1113 Confucius classes in Primary and Secondary schools selected to receive this award.
The university aspires to be a “preferred university for developing leadership in technology and productive citizenship”, and to “making knowledge useful”.
