-

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is a leading University of Technology and with approximately 23 000 students, DUT is the first choice for higher education in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

It is one of five technical institutions on the continent to offer Doctoral Degrees. The current Chancellor is Nonkululeko Nyembezi, an astute entrepreneur who is widely respected for her business acumen.

DUT’s DNA strands which are student-centeredness and engagement are the two threads which make up the fabric of the University as outlined in its Strategic Plan 2.0.

DUT is located in the beautiful cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg (PMB). As a University of Technology, it prioritises the quality of teaching and learning by ensuring its academic staff possesses the highest possible qualification that they can get.

DUT is a result of the merger in April 2002 of two prestigious technikons, ML Sultan and Technikon Natal. It was named the Durban Institute of Technology and later became the Durban University of Technology in line with the rest of the universities of technology.

DUT,is a member of the International Association of Universities, is a multi-campus university of technology at the cutting edge of higher education, technological training and research. It operates on five different campuses in Durban, and two in Pietermaritzburg.

The campuses are: Brickfield Campus, Durban; City Campus, Durban; Indumiso Campus, Pietermaritzburg; ML Sultan Campus, Durban; Ritson Campus, Durban; Riverside Campus, Pietermaritzburg; and Steve Biko Campus, Durban.

DUT offers tuition through its six faculties namely,: Accounting and Informatics; Applied Sciences; Arts and Design; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; and Management Sciences.

Professor Thandwa Mthembu is the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of DUT.

DUT has made significant strides in recent years to improve its research output. The University held its 2017 Research and Innovation Awards in Durban in recognition of innovative excellence to various staff and students for engagement, knowledge and student-centred projects. While the Durban University of Technology offers contact learning, DUT is also a member of COIL, which is the Collaborative Online International Learning programme.

The University also offers outstanding opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students across multiple disciplines. DUT qualifications are recognised internationally, and it has a remarkable track record of producing outstanding graduates, who are pioneers and influential in various sectors of the economy both locally and internationally.

At an international level, the DUT Confucius Institute (CI) is a vehicle that promotes friendship between China and South Africa. DUT’s CI stood out in 2017 with the receipt of the “Global Advanced Confucius Institute” award at the 12th Global Confucius Institute Conference. We regard this achievement as a sterling feat for the DUT’s CI as there are only 25 Advanced Confucius Institutes and five Advanced Confucius Classes from 525 Confucius Institutes and 1113 Confucius classes in Primary and Secondary schools selected to receive this award.

The university aspires to be a “preferred university for developing leadership in technology and productive citizenship”, and to “making knowledge useful”.

Planning a successful career at DUT doesn’t have to be an elusive dream. We help prospective students make it a reality! To find out more, visit our website on www.dut.ac.za
