Davids was a combative midfielder who decided to hang up his boots just after turning 30 having started a mere two games in his final season. By the time he retired he had returned to Ajax Cape Town for his second spell after spending two-and-a-half-years at Belgian club Lierse. He enjoyed a career that took him to Germany as a teenager and he also played in Sweden. He was capped at all levels of international football and ended up with 23 senior national team
