Carlos Kameni
Nationality: Cameroon
Position: Goalkeeper
LaLiga clubs: Espanyol, Malaga
LaLiga games/goals: 335/0
It is rare for African goalkeepers to shine in top European leagues, but Kameni spent 14 years at Espanyol and Malaga, and was a regular for most of the time at both clubs.
He followed in the footsteps of Thomas N’kono to sign for Espanyol, though it might have been very different.
He was at French side Le Havre and was signed by English club Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2003/04 season, but saw his dream move scuppered when he could not get a work permit.
He later moved to Espanyol instead, where he had almost instant success in winning the Copa del Rey.
Kameni did have his troubles though, he was racially abused by the club’s own fans after taking over from popular number one Gorka Iraizoz, later fought with a supporter after training and even had a scuffle with teammate Grégory Béranger later on.
That was all in the 2008/09 season when Espanyol were battling the drop, but Kameni remained the star, breaking N’Kono’s club record of 497 minutes (more than eight hours) without conceding a goal.
The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at the club spelled bad news for him though, and he was dropped, leaving for Malaga in January 2012, where he famously helped the team to a 0-0 draw with a Real Madrid side that had an astonishing 31 shots in the game.
He remained at Malaga until 2017, when he joined Turkish side Fenerbahce.
