ORLANDO PIRATES COACHES IN THE LAST DECADE

-

ROGER DE SA (Sept. 2012-Jan 2014)

De Sa took Pirates to the 2013 CAF Champions League final but did not win any silverware in his 16 months in charge and was axed soon after their defeat to Al Ahly in the decider.

VLADIMIR VERMEZOVIC (Feb. 2014-Dec. 2014)

The Serbian former Kaizer Chiefs coach had a brief spell in charge that netted the Nedbank Cup at the end of the 2013/14 season, but form in general was mixed. He left a club reeling from the murder of Senzo Meyiwa before he had completed a year in charge.

ERIC TINKLER (Dec. 2014-June. 2016)

Tinkler had been assistant to both De Sa and Vermezovic but was handed the reins after that, though the club insisted on calling him a ‘caretaker’ for a long time. He took the side to the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup final, but they lost to Etoile du Sahel in the decider. He left at the end of the 2015-16 campaign without silverware.

MUHSIN ERTUGRAL (Jul. 2016-Nov. 2016)

A disastrous spell in charge for the former Chiefs coach, who never seemed a great fit to start with. It culminated with him resigning on live television following a 6-1 loss to SuperSport United.

AUGUSTO PALACIOS (Nov. 2016-Feb. 2017)

The Peruvian returned for yet another spell in caretaker charge but did not improve things as he suffered a club record 6-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns. He won his first three games in charge and then none of the next nine.

KJELL JONEVRET (Feb. 2017-June. 2017)

The Swede’s appointment came out of the blue and like Jose Riveiro, he had never worked in Africa before. He struggled to adapt and was sacked at the end of the 2016-17 season.

MILUTIN SREDOJEVIC (Aug. 2017-Aug. 2019)

Sredojevic had a six-month spell at Pirates as a much younger coach in the 2006-07 campaign and returned for two seasons having excelled at international level. He led Pirates to back-to-back second place finishes in the league but left suddenly to move to Zamalek.

RHULANI MOKWENA (Aug. 2019-Dec. 2019)

Mokwena moved up from assistant and was given a chance, but results did not meet expectations and the club decided to go in a different direction. Mokwena left shortly afterwards to rejoin Mamelodi Sundowns as assistant to Pitso Mosimane.

JOSEF ZINNBAUER (Dec. 2019-Aug. 2021)

The German coach was like a breath of fresh air when he first arrived and results were promising, including wining the 2020 MTN8, a first trophy in six years. But the team regressed and he could not find that old spark. He left one game into the 2021-22 season.

MANDLA NCIKAZI & FADLU DAVIDS (Aug. 2021-Jun. 2022)

Pirates went the co-coach route that has become popular in the PSL but despite their CAF Confederation Cup final appearance, it did not really work out for the duo and domestic form was disappointing.
