Oakhill matric art astounds once again
On Friday 27 October, fine art connoisseurs in Knysna were treated to a celebration of creativity and excellence at the opening of the Oakhill Matric Art exhibition. This annual event showcases the works of Grade 12 learners for their IEB practical exam.
Every year without fail the director of art Amy Nuttall manages to guide her students into unchartered realms of adventurous self-expression. What is striking year after year is the easy rapport Amy has with her students and how she gets them, in this age of infernal devices, not only to paint like maestros, but to draw with such intensity. In whatever media chosen, one is entranced by the lucid exploration of line which is, in turn, sensuous, querulous, fluid or lyrical.
This year’s exhibition was no different. Personalised spaces were created by Amy and the 13 students to project their personal response to the topic. Visitors stood profoundly moved before intimate interpretations of nature, a feast of the senses, the love of a companion, provocative pooches and a unique installation created from ashes of the Knysna fire.
To not only impart the techniques of putting medium to paper but to put the whole exhibition together with the fun, angst and self knowledge of a road trip completed is the hallmark of an exceptional teacher.
So congratulations go to Amy and her 13 learners Buddhas Braun, Michaela Cross, Cassidy Hartslief, Julia Lamprecht, Naquita Lloyd, Ella Nasser, Francine Olivier, Kayleigh Packwood, Emma Stam, Kiara Taylor, Rebekah Utian, Jia Watts and Courteney Wilkinson. –
