Cop on ‘special leave’ after N2 scuffle

- Nwabisa Pondoyi

A Knysna traffic official has been placed on “special leave” pending the conclusion of the investigation into the altercation between himself and a civilian on 5 April.

The incident on Main Road was caught on camera and shared on various social networks within minutes after the incident. It created an uproar in the community and was even a point of discussion on radio station uMhlobo Wenene’s BEE show the day after the incident.

The man on the video, Alroy Kerspey, and his wife Mercia have since sought legal advice in light of the fact that he was allegedly unlawfully arrested. They were advised to not talk to the media.

The Kerspeys have pressed criminal charges against the officer in question and they are now seeking legal advice in terms of taking civil action.

The municipality’s initial response to the incident on 5 April was that they were aware of it and investigating.

On Tuesday 17 April they said, “The municipal manager Kam Chetty placed the officer on special leave on 12 April. Only on completion of the investigation will the municipal manager consider any further steps.”

They added that the matter is viewed in a serious light and receiving the appropriate attention.

“However, this process cannot be played

out in public or in the media. In the interest of all the parties involved we request the public to allow the process to run its course.”

Commenting on the KPH Facebook page, Sherilene Campher wrote on 12 April (edited and translated): “Yoh. I watched and listened again and again. The traffic official states politely, ‘No man, Mr Kerspey, just cooperate with us, please’. Yoh, unnecessary stuff this.”
