Gabions go ahead on Sedge beach
Gabions continue to be erected at Myoli beach in Sedgefield, despite concerns raised by the local community.
SANParks confirmed this week that the matter has been referred to legal counsel following their inability to put a halt to the construction activities.
The gabion baskets are being installed to safeguard about seven homes on the beach that are affected by shifting dunes. It was previously indicated that officials from the Department of Environmental Affairs were to inspect the area and submit their findings, however, it is not certain if this was completed.
“We are engaging our legal department and verifying all relevant information.
At this point we cannot divulge further details,” said SANParks spokesperson Nandi Mgwadlamba.
The Knysna Municipality, who was initially approached by SANParks to pause the construction, reacted similarly when contacted by the Knysna-Plett Herald.
“The matter has been referred to our external legal counsel. We will only be able to comment once we have consulted with our legal counsel,” they said in a statement.
An attorney representing the homeowners, Richard Sohn, was also sent a list of questions, to which a reply was not received at the time of going to print.
It is unclear as to when the construction will be completed. It began three weeks ago despite no permit being obtained in terms of the Outeniqua Sensitive Coastal Area Extension legislation, which basically makes provision for the regulation of vegetation clearing, earthworks and dredging activities.
