Greater Knysna remains undefeated

- – Staff reporter

In an exciting day of rugby at the Hornlee sports field, Greater Knysna Rugby Club (GKRC) defeated the Western Tigers from Plettenberg Bay in a very tight and hard-fought battle to remain the only undefeated team in the SWD Coastal League.

The visitors made scoring difficult and GKRC had to settle for a penalty converted by Ludwe Vara to open their scoring. The Tigers forced the host into a mistake that resulted in a penalty that they converted with ease to level the score.

Both teams added another penalty each before GKRC’s fullback Masakhane Sitole crossed the try line for the first try of the game, coming after a great line break from Thando Tsewu. The try was converted by Vara and gave the host a 13-6 halftime lead.

The second half was a tight match-up with both teams playing entertaining rugby, however, with only one try added to the match as Bradley Kiewitz created space on the outside for Tsewu to score in the corner. Vara was unsuccessful with the conversion and the score remained 18-6 at the end whistle.

“Western Tigers gave us a real tough time and five weeks without training did not really help our cause. The boys, however, trusted our processes and to rate them on the tempo of the game their fitness level was really impressive,” said GKRC coach Aschin Klein.

“Upfront our u20 prop Robin Lamini and lock Kurt Prinsloo stood out for us, as well as Luthdo Josiya and Sikhonati Koyana. The forwards did all the dirty work to set up the platform for the backs to score the tries. Sitole, Asenathi Mpotyo and Tsewu caught the eye at the back,” said Klein.

GKRC’s second team went down to the first team of Kranshoek Dolphins 24-7 in one of the curtain raisers of the day.
