Dedicated caregivers run soup kitchen in Hornlee

- Zoë FIck

- In Knysna's vibrant communities, it is the compassionate caregivers who serve as the lifeblood, tirelessly assisting those in need.

Among them, Karen Harker, Beryl Classen, and Sherri Kriga shine as beacons of hope, demonstrating a great deal of compassion and selflessness.

For almost three years, these remarkable women have been running a soup kitchen in Hornlee, dedicating their efforts to providing food and support to those facing hardship. Despite limited resources, their steadfast commitment has allowed them to serve an estimated 80 individuals in the community each day. While they rely on the generosity of local donors, the group continues to face challenges in obtaining sufficient donations to expand their vital services.

"We make sure that these people have something to eat every day to keep their tummies full. We have lots of people gathered here every day, young and old, to get themselves a bit of soup and bread," says Harker. The large number of people that these three women feed on a daily basis speaks to the issue of food insecurity within the community.

The soup kitchen relies on the generosity of local businesses and organisations to sustain its operations. Anywhere IT and Bosuns have been supporting their efforts by providing donations of bread and ingredients to make soup.

The women are actively seeking further contributions from the community to help

them serve a larger number of individuals and make a greater impact. The efforts of these three women provide an opportunity for Knysna residents to uplift their neighbours and contribute to the well-being

of the entire community. Anyone who would like to get more involved in aiding their efforts with donations of food, funds, and resources should please contact Karen Harker on 071 977 9024.
