Caturday a meowvoulous celebration of Kaws
Our ‘Caturday’ was aimed at giving more focus to the cats that are up for adoption
KNYSNA - On Saturday 20 April, the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws) hosted a special event called Caturday.
The gathering brought together a delightful blend of yoga enthusiasts and cat fanatics, all eager to celebrate the incredible work done by Kaws for Knysna's precious pets. Kaws is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals, including cats, in the Knysna community.
Caturday took place at the Knysna Sports Academy field and was a cat-themed yoga session, where participants could indulge in peaceful yoga practice, savour soothing tea, and play with the adorable kittens at the Kaws cattery.
"Our 'Caturday' was aimed at giving more focus to the cats that are up for adoption, especially as we have had so many surrendered and stray cats coming through our doors over the past few months, with very few cat adoptions recently," says Kaws.
As a community-driven organisation, Kaws runs on donations from the community and assists members of the community who aren't able to afford private veterinary care. A huge part of what Kaws does is to rescue and rehome cats and dogs that are found as strays or surrendered by their owners.
The events Kaws hosts aim to bring awareness to the sheer number of animals needing help, and adoptions, as well as to raise funds to help cover expenses.
The yoga session at Caturday was led by Kama Burman, a skilled instructor from the Lotus Studio in Knysna, with the presence of the kittens adding an extra touch of joy and playfulness.
"Our cattery is a little house on the property, with several rooms, filled with interactive toys, couches, cat-trees for climbing and other areas for relaxation, playing and cat naps," says Kaws.
"One of the rooms is dedicated specifically to kittens. It is a temporary home for the cats we rescue, until their forever family comes along. We try to make it as comfortable as we possibly can for them while they are in our care."
Their incredible cattery assistant, Zuzelity Ennis, knows every cat and kitten, their likes and dislikes and takes exceptional care of them.
Kaws also has a team of regular cat volunteers, including Anika Venter and Lisa Schwartz who were instrumental in putting the Caturday Yoga event together.
Caturday received tremendous support from the local community, showcasing the collective commitment to animal welfare and the spirit of giving back.
