A new chapter in mountain biking

- Zoë Fick

PLETTENBERG BAY - The renowned multi-day mountain bike stage race known as the Dr Evil Classic has undergone a significant rebranding. From now on, it will be known as the Dr Evil Experience, a name that embodies the essence of the event and its deep connection to its hometown, Plettenberg Bay. This name change marks a shift in focus, aligning the event with its commitment to providing participants with an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Garden Route.

The name 'Dr Evil' has long evoked two distinct images in people's minds. Some may recall the iconic bald villain from the Austin Powers movies, while others associate it with the gruelling challenges faced by riders during the inaugural event in 2012, led by Leon Evan, also known as Dr Evil. However, the event organisers have decided that it is time for a change.

For over a decade, the Dr

Evil Experience has captivated mountain biking enthusiasts with its incredible multi-day stage race set against the picturesque backdrop of Plettenberg Bay.

The town, known as 'Bahia Formosa' or Beautiful Bay, was named by Portuguese settlers in the 16th century, and its natural beauty serves as a fitting setting for this extraordinary event.

Zandile Meneses, co-founder of the Dr Evil Experience, explained the motivation behind the name change. Having previously worked on the Rotary Cycle Tour in Knysna for many years, Meneses and Leon Evans decided to embark on their own venture in 2012. Since then, the event has grown steadily, attracting more participants each year.

The organisers sought to strike a balance between challenge and enjoyment, creating a comprehensive and fun experience for riders.

All that remained was to find a name that truly reflected the event's offerings and showcased the splendour of Plett.

The decision to rebrand the event as the Dr Evil Experience signifies a shift in focus and a celebration of its evolution.

What was once a test of endurance for hardcore riders has transformed into a holistic experience that emphasises the fun side of mountain biking. The carefully curated route showcases the finest trails the Garden Route has to offer, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural surroundings.

Yet, the Dr Evil Experience is not solely about the on-bike adventure. The off-bike atmosphere is equally vibrant and engaging, making the event a well-rounded experience for all participants. This new direction aims to captivate riders, showcasing Plettenberg Bay and its unparalleled beauty in ways never before seen.

With its rebranding, the event embraces its roots in Plettenberg Bay and promises participants an unforgettable adventure.

The 2024 Dr Evil Experience is set to take place from 19 to 21 September. Entries are now open and riders can either enter as a team or in the solo category.

With its rebranding, the event embraces its roots in Plett.
