A commitment to research that matters
UP launches website to share its groundbreaking discoveries
Did you know that researchers can use statistics to differentiate between dialects in African dolphins? Or that a rare genetic event, which sometimes occurs in frogs, could unlock climate, agricultural and health challenges? Have you ever wondered how one can establish a balance between wildlife conservation, natural resource use, farming, animal disease control, and human health? These are just a few of the interesting questions that researchers at the Uni- versity of Pretoria (UP) are currently working on, because at UP we believe that the solutions to change the world can be found in the research we do today.
The university takes great pride in the quality of its research output, generated by its diverse community of researchers — from A-rated scientists and established researchers, to the emerging young talent who will continue building UP’s reputation on this front in the future. The institution’s overall strategy is to leverage off areas of research strength to achieve the highest levels of relevance and impact, which feed into UP’s commitment to address major challenges on the African continent and globally. There is a growing emphasis on multidisciplinary and collaborative work across knowledge and geographic boundaries, where collaborative partnerships with research groups, universities and institutions across the continent are of particular importance.
Critical to the achievement of these goals is the sharing of scientific knowledge and effective science communication to the broader public, policymakers and other stakeholders. To this end UP has launched a website called Research Matters, which showcases its research and innovation output and communicates the impact of this work to the world.
The Research Matters website incorporates case studies on research projects being undertaken by the university’s academics, exciting videos and info-graphics that provide an overview of high impact projects at a glance, as well as information about the various units, centres and institutes that are changing the world we live in through their research.
