Growing a ’fro with no guidance, except what you find on the internet, is not pap and vleis. Trust me, I’ve tried it twice already. I’m on my third try as we speak and I still have questions. If I’m not fighting with hairstylists over the need to put the hairdryer on cool, because heat breaks my hair, I’m contemplating baldness whenever I have to section my hair into amapondo (plaited “horns”) before I go to sleep to retain length. The silk bonnet, choosing between a moisturiser and coconut oil, protective hairstyles, not being able to afford shea butter and just not having any guidance, because no one in my family has kept their hair natural long enough to know these things — all of this is a lot. Every YouTube tutorial I’ve seen is by an American who speaks about products I can’t get or she has a different hair texture to mine. So Vuyo Morgan’s channel was a necessary refresher. She’s taken me through everything from a washday routine and trimming my hair coil type 4c all the way to critical unsponsored product reviews. If you are also on a journey to understand and learn how to care for your natural hair, head on over to Morgan on YouTube.
