Hail, eternal supreme guide

Not content with the title of president, Burundi’s Pierre Nkurunziza has anointed himself the country’s “eternal supreme guide”. A former rebel leader, Nkurunziza has ruled Burundi since 2005. Although the Constitution specifies a limit of two presidential terms, Nkurunziza has used a combination of extreme force and legal technicalities to keep himself in power. A proposed constitutional amendment could see him hold the highest office until 2034.

Women navigate the skies

Ethiopian Airlines has put together another all-female flight crew as it adds another destination to its network. The new route connects Addis Ababa to Buenos Aires in Argentina. The airline, Africa’s largest, made history when it sent an all-female team up into the skies in December on a flight to Lagos. The team was made up entirely of women, from the pilots and cabin crew to the in-flight ramp operations and flight dispatchers.

Bey, Jay rip off

At the end of the montage announcing their On the Run II tour, Jay-Z and Beyoncé are seated on a motorbike adorned with a long-horned bull’s skull. The clip is a reference to the poster for Touki Bouki, a classic 1973 Senegalese film. The film, directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty, tells the story of Mory, a cowherd, and Anta, a university student, who try to make money to go to Paris and leave their boring lives behind.
