Highlands en route to PSL

Undefeated in the National First Division since Owen da Gama took over, Highlands Park have been steadily cruising to promotion for months now. On Saturday, even the most stubborn platitudes will likely be rendered useless.

The Lions of the North cannot be overtaken on points after their mauling of Tshakhuma FC last weekend — their third 4-0 haul of the season. Only the mathematical flake of a possibility that Black Leopards can catch up and win on goal difference has postponed the coronation. A point at home against the University of Pretoria will confirm Highlands Park as champions and the newest additions to the PSL. Sprinting to the finish with four games to spare will be a fitting cap for what has been a forceful season.

Final stretch for Brazilians

Last weekend, the effervescent Percy Tau and captain Hlompho Kekana ensured that Sundowns continued their journey. Their successful trip to face Cape Town City FC has been rewarded with a semifinal in the Nedbank Cup against Maritzburg United — and it seems everyone else would prefer to salivate over the prospect of a final between Downs and Kaizer Chiefs. On Sunday, the Brazilians will take on Baroka FC. Interim Baroka coach MacDonald Makhubedu’s men are in the midst of a closely fought mid-table battle and could possibly provide stern opposition to the would-be champions. As the season draws to a close, agricultural displays against tough nuts like Baroka could well end up securing the title.
