Gambia’s first woman mayor

The capital city of Banjul in The Gambia has elected Rohey Malick Lowe as its first woman mayor. Her appointmen­t was confirmed by the Independen­t Electoral Commission after the May 12 elections — the first mayoral election after the ousting of former president Yahya Jammeh in January last year. Lowe says her immediate priorities are improving sanitation, and public infrastruc­ture and addressing issues in the municipal economy.

Kenyans’ ticket to Windsor

The Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club in Nairobi, Kenya, is charging couples one million Kenyan shillings ($9 975) to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. The aptly named hotel has promised an exclusive viewing of the wedding, a night for two and a helicopter ride to Mount Kenya for breakfast. At that price, a couple could easily travel to the United Kingdom for the wedding — and go shopping while they’re at it.

Bitcoin bites the dust in Zim

Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank has stopped banks and other financial institutio­ns from trading or processing cryptocurr­ency (such as bitcoin) payments — despite growing interest in digital monetary assets. Reserve Bank governor John Mangudya said that no one was licensed to trade in virtual money and that those who continue with these transactio­ns would not have the protection of the law. The two biggest cryptocurr­ency platforms in Zimbabwe are Golix and Styx24.com.
